Dr.
Heard has a special interest in the area of pediatric/adolescent
gynecology. This unique area of medicine involves evaluating
and treating children and teenagers with gynecologic problems.
Many problems related to this young population are unique
and require specialized training and experience. During
his residency in obstetrics and gynecology from 1992-1995,
Dr. Heard treated pediatric patients at Le Bonheur Children's
hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He added to his experience
during a four year commitment in the military as a general
OB/GYN. More recently, Dr. Heard spent 6 months working
in the Gynecology Clinic at Texas Children's Hospital
in Houston.
The
range of gynecologic disorders in children and adolescents
ranges from congenital abnormalities and genetic syndromes
found at birth to developmental problems and concerns
that are also found in adults. These include conditions
such as menstrual disorders, endometriosis, pelvic pain,
ovarian cysts, and sexually transmitted infections.
Dr Heard has a special interest in adolescent obesity
and sees pediatric patients for weight management as
well. Many gynecologic disorders such as polycystic
ovarian disease, diabetes, and thyroid conditions can
be associated with weight problems. Pediatric patients
are no exception to this rule. Adolescents that are
overweight many times go on to be obese adults with
medical problems that can complicate future pregnancies
and general health.
